Parent Resources

SCAT  is dedicated to providing resources and information for parents to use as a source of education and answers to their questions about tobacco, drug and alcohol use. We want to empower parents with knowledge and information to raise their children substance-free.  For truly practical information on the challenges that your kids (and grandkids) face and how to keep the lines of communication open visit  Parents. The Anti-Drug. Be sure to check out the Parent Toolkit for ideas on talking to your kids, knowing if they have a substance abuse problem, getting help and more.

Talk About IT!

Don’t assume that your child knows where you stand on drinking– Talk Early & Talk Often.
Have regular, open conversations with your child on the subject and make your position clearly known. “I am against underage drinking and smoking.”  Give them expectations on their behavior. “I expect that you will not drink.” Be clear and concise about why and the consequences for breaking the rules.

Prescription Drug Abuse -Did You Know?

pillsMany kids mistakenly believe prescription drugs are safer to abuse than illegal street drugs. After marijuana and alcohol, the most common drugs teens are misuing or abusing are prescription medications. 12-17 year olds abuse prescription drugs more than ecstasy, heroin, crack/cocaine and methamphetamines combined. Visit http://www.drugfreeworld.org/drugfacts/prescription/abuse-international-statistics.html for a wealth of information about the prescription drug abuse epidemic and how to keep your kids safe.
